Albert Watson: tra le memorie di una geisha e le visioni di Steve Jobs

Quando vi trovate di fronte ad una copertina di un libro che vi piace particolarmente, o ad una locandina di un film, voi appassionati fruitori di fotografia, vi ponete mai la domanda «ma chi è il fotografo che l’ha scattata»? Beh io lo faccio quasi sempre (soprattutto per le copertine dei libri, mi piace andare in libreria magari solo per leggere gli autori di quelle fantastiche coverpage). Per le locandine è tutto molto diverso perchè spesso risulta davvero difficile risalire al fotografo che le ha realizzate…

è il caso di “memorie di una geisha” (splendido film), la sua locandina, quel  primissimo piano, quegli occhi così profondi, qual candore di pelle a contrasto con i capelli così neri…è un ritratto che mi ha sempre affascinato (fotograficamente) tanto che penso abbia influenzato anche gran parte della mia fotografia ritrattistica e di beauty. Un’immagine a cui per anni non ho dato un autore, non so perchè, l’ho cercato più volte ma senza grandi risultati poi l’altro giorno, in libreria mi sono trovato a sfogliare le pagine dell’ultimo libro su Steve Jobs, e come al mio solito sono finito dritto sull’autore dell’immagine (molto più semplice da trovare perchè sempre citato in sovraccoperta): Albert Watson.
Bazzicando sul suo sito non si possono che ammirare meravigliosi ritratti tra i tanti, con mio grande stupore, ho ritrovato lei..

Watson infatti è proprio l’autore di questi due magnifici ritratti (quello a Jobs e quello della locandina di memorie di una geisha) oltre che di un’infinità di altre meravigliose immagini celeberrime, ha fotografato icone del rock, rapper, attori, da Mick Jagger a Jack Nicholson, passando per Alfred Hitchcock e la famiglia reale inglese (Watson è stato il fotografo ufficiale delle nozze del Principe Andrea con Sarah Ferguson), Kate Moss e B.B. King. Ha inoltre realizzato immagini per centinaia di campagne pubblicitarie di successo per grandi marchi come Gap, Levi’s, Chanel ed ha diretto oltre 600 spot televisivi. Risulta essere uno dei fotografi più influenti del secolo con 250 coverpage di Vogue. Watson, di origine scozzese (cresce e vive ad Edimburgo), sebbene cieco da un occhio, si dedica alle arti visive completamente studiando film, televisione e fotografia al Royal College of Art di Londra. Nel 1970 si trasferisce a New York con la moglie e lì inizia a fotografare soprattutto per hobby, poi nel 76 il suo primo lavoro importante per Vogue, da qui il grande slancio per la sua immensa carriera
